Iain had been emailing me for a considerable period of time as we planned a surprise for his wife. I must admit to being concerned that Melinda would see an email because it had her name in the email address. More about that shortly.
Anyway, a phone call from Iain just as I was about to leave home yesterday, making sure we were all set for 12 noon. I assured him yes I was, as I was about to leave.
I always allow heaps of time when travelling to ensure arriving in good time. Lucky I had chosen to do that as I was slowed down by runners doing what seemed to be a huge relay and I believe ending in Akaroa. Congratulations to everyone who took part as it was a very challenging run in parts.
Anyway with directions "to go past the Lighthouse and head to the house just past the studio", I was parked up and waiting for the clock to click over to 12 noon.
Always interesting going into surprise events because you are never sure who is going to know what is happening. As it turned out most of the guests (well dressed guests) were "in the know" and it was only Melinda who didn’t know. I understand she was totally surprised even though everyone was dressed up for a BBQ lunch. I was later told, that Melinda never checks the home email, Iain was safe using that to communicate with me.
After introducing myself doing a reading about marriage, I reminded everyone “Just as spring blossoms anew after a harsh winter, so must spouses renew their love in their daily lives.”
Then I had the guests making smart remarks when I asked:
“Have you come here freely and with the intention of renewing your marriage vows?” As Melinda didn’t know. It was very much a surprise sprung upon her.
A very cute grandson came forward with a ring and he even took it out of the box and gave to his Gran.
Short and sweet, and I pronounced “today your affirmed your commitment to one another, go forth in love and friendship for the rest of the days of your lives.
Of course a kiss before we signed the renewal certificate and it was witnessed.
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs McLellan.
And a big bouquet to Iain for creating such a special event for his wife. He is definitely a keeper. Any man who can bring together a renewal of vows ceremony is a keeper.
